Additional Photo Information The business district of Mount Washington, looking south from Corbley Street toward the crest of the road at Campus Lane. The road was widened and paved from curb to curb. The pavement appears to be concrete but I am not sure. On the left is Max Schwartz's dry cleaning and clothing store, which in later years moved across the street. Just beyond Schwartz's is Krogers grocery. This store started out in a single frame house and was added to over the years, in this same location. The sign featuring Coca Cola is owned by a "Billiard Parlor". Beyond Krogers is a two story building with a sign for a real estate business, plus a small round outdoor sign for a barber shop. Near the top of the street on the left side is a sign for "Hi Sea" gasoline. To the right of the gentleman setting something on the fender of the Model A roadster is a small meat market. Just above the head of the man with the cane is a delivery truck for the Mount Washington Ice & Beer company. Further up the street on the right hand side is a bakery, a hardware store, and a shoe store. As you can see, all the large trees that had lined the street were removed, which allowed for the full width including the parking lane for automobiles. The steeple of the Methodist Church is obscured by the tall trees. The public school was located at the top of the hill in this view, at the southwest corner of Beechmont and Campus Lane. |
