Additional Photo Information This view of Mount Washington, taken in 1959, is looking southwest. Beechmont Avenue is intersected by Corbley in the lower right side of the photo. The water tower is a well established Mount Washington landmark by now. The large dark, flat-roofed building in the upper left ( facing away onto Beechmont) is Eckerts Department Store. Krogers has evolved from a small frame house into a larger grocery store, with additions built around the original structure. You can see the peaked roof sticking up from the flat roof of the overall building. In this photo Krogers has begun the process of expanding again into the vacant lot just north of its current location here. Sutton Avenue is just visible in the upper portion of the picture. The gasoline service station just to the right of Mount Washington Hardware is a Sohio station. At the SE corner of Beechmont and Corbley is the Texaco station. The Potters Shoe Store sign clearly faces Beechmont in this view. At the left end of Beechmont, adjacent to the T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, is another gas station. This had been different brands, but in 1959 this was a Socony station. By the following year (1960) this property was vacant. |
